Saas-Fee and The Capra: The Swiss Village Worth Building a Trip Around

The best discovery of my year came from a meeting I almost skipped.

At Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas, where advisors like me spend five days meeting the world’s best hotels, I saw “The Capra” on my agenda and decided I’d listen politely for a few minutes and coast into the morning break.

Instead, I spent that meeting listening to Phaedra Letrou tell her family’s story: parents who went looking for a mountain home to escape city life, found a tiny village in the Swiss Alps, and instead of building a house, turned a small hotel into something remarkable.

By the end I was complimenting her dress and planning a trip. Ten minutes later I was on a sidewalk Googling a village I had somehow never heard of.

Here is what I found, and why it belongs on your family’s radar.

A village with no cars and 300 days of sun

Saas-Fee sits in the Valais Alps, surrounded by glaciers and eighteen peaks rising above 4,000 meters. The village is entirely car-free: you arrive, you park, and from that moment the town moves at the speed of footsteps and little electric taxis. Children roam the way children did a generation ago.

Its altitude and glaciers make Saas-Fee one of the Alps’ most snow-sure destinations, with a remarkably long ski season and more than 300 sunny days a year. In good conditions, skiing can even extend into summer.

But I wouldn’t come here in July just to ski.

Summer is about everything below the glacier: hiking trails in every direction, mountain days built around gondolas and picnics, cool alpine air and the kind of setting my clients have been asking about since the Mediterranean started hitting triple digits.

Winter is for the skis. Summer is for the mountains themselves.

And while Saas-Fee feels tucked away, it isn’t isolated. Zermatt and the Matterhorn sit one valley over, close enough to add as a day trip by private transfer if seeing Switzerland’s most famous mountain is important to you.

But I wouldn’t choose Saas-Fee because it’s near Zermatt.

I’d choose it because it offers something increasingly difficult to find in the Alps: a beautiful, walkable mountain village that still feels intimate enough to belong to the people staying there.

The Capra

The hotel takes its name from the Latin word for goat, inspired by the distinctive black-and-white goats found in the Valais. The family reads their two tones as a kind of yin and yang: body and mind, man and mountain. That idea runs through the whole property.

The Capra is a five-star, 38-room-and-suite chalet-style hotel, still family-owned and recognized at Level II in Switzerland Tourism’s Swisstainable program.

Swiss architects and a British interior team designed it around a “fire and ice” idea: wood-paneled walls and stone bathrooms, log fires reflected in crystal light, glaciers framed in floor-to-ceiling windows, and furnishings made specifically for the house.

It holds two MICHELIN Keys, and in 2023 was voted Switzerland’s second-best luxury hotel.

Thirty-eight rooms and suites. Second in the country.

That ratio tells you most of what you need to know.

Why it works for families

This is where The Capra separates itself from the grand alpine brands.

There is a ski-in, ski-out cabin beside the slopes, so mornings start on snow instead of in a shuttle. There is a Fun Lab stocked with games, foosball and table tennis, which tells you the family that owns this hotel has actually raised children. The library has a fireplace and a big-screen projector for movie nights.

And when the kids are settled, there is the Peak Health Spa, plus a private spa with its own jacuzzi, steam room and sauna that can be reserved for just the two of you.

Summer rates can start around $600 USD per night. For a five-star hotel of this caliber in Switzerland, that’s one of the more compelling values I’ve found in the Alps.
